Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery helps patients with obesity achieve a healthier weight when routine diet and exercise or medications have not worked. Weight loss surgery works by restricting how much a person can eat and/or decreasing the amount of calories the body can absorb. The bariatric surgery teams at Independence Health System offer two types of surgery, the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.

The minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery used by surgeons at Independence Health System offers many benefits, including:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Faster recovery
  • Less pain
  • Lower risk of hernia

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Decreased calorie absorption occurs when the route from the stomach to a portion of the small intestine is bypassed. The stomach is made into a pouch that holds less food. Both the bypass and smaller pouch allow you to eat and absorb less food, resulting in weight loss.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

A weight loss procedure that permanently reduces the size of the stomach. The surgery creates a thin "sleeve" of stomach, removing the rest. Patients experience significant weight loss and improvements in their health. The procedure limits the amount of food a person can eat and helps the person feel fuller, sooner.

*If you have acid reflux disease, Barrett’s Esophagus and have had a Nissen Fundoplication, this surgery will not be a good choice for you.
